Chapter Thirteen

“It feels wrong to show up without a gift, or flowers or something.” EV whispered to Chloe as they rode the elevator up to Community General Hospital’s third floor intensive care unit.

“What did you want to do, bake her a casserole? The poor woman is in a coma; and I doubt the first words out of her mouth will have anything to do with proper etiquette. Besides, it’s Christian I’m worried about; Stacey is being monitored by a team of doctors and nurses, but nobody’s looking after him, and I don’t think he’s been back home since the night of her attack.”

“I know; Zellner of all people has been keeping an eye on his place. Seems he’s gotten over Christian stealing the clothes off his scarecrow; I don’t think he’s ever forgiven a faux pas quite so quickly.” EV shook her head; she’d tried to get on Zellner’s good side for years, to no avail. It probably had something to do with the fact that EV had no patience for Abe’s conspiracy theories, or his tendency toward impromptu, informative lectures. Christian, on the other hand, seemed to enjoy them, and with his enthusiasm had stroked Zellner’s ego into submission.

Rounding the corner into Stacey’s room, Chloe let out a low whistle. “I guess we needn’t have worried about Christian.” A tray of food sat next to a fold-out chair made into a bed, and though his face was drawn in concern, his clothes and hair were clean and recently washed.

“Hey Christian, how are you?” Chloe asked as she enveloped the man in a comforting hug.

“How’s Stacey?” EV asked at the same time. She glanced over to the bed where Stacey was hooked up to several beeping machines with an IV of something clear running into the crook of her elbow, her blank face somehow peaceful in sleep

Christian shook his head sadly. “She still hasn’t regained consciousness, but she’s stable. And she’s breathing on her own, which is a very good sign.” He sunk onto a chair and reached out to stroke Stacey’s fingers.

“Have you been here the whole time?” EV asked gently. “What about her family? Has she had a lot of visitors?”

“I haven’t been home, no. But the nurses here have been bringing me things ever since they realized I wasn’t going to leave. There’s an undercover officer stationed in the hallway, but I still don’t feel comfortable leaving, in case the guy who did this tries to finish the job.” He stared down at the dainty hand resting inside his larger, stronger one. “I just wish I could have gotten there a few minutes faster. It seems I’m always a bit too late.”

“You did as much as you could, and more than most people would have done. She’s extremely lucky. Stay positive; that’s what she needs right now.”

Relaxing infinitesimally, Christian began to open up and gestured to the food and blankets piled around him. “Stacey’s parents are the nicest people; they’ve given me permission to stay as long as I like, and even talked the nurses into lifting the visiting hours ban.
